MTH 402 Math for Our World
Many undergrads enroll in MTH 402 to fulfill their undergraduate general education requirement (Mathematics). In addition, MTH 402 is also a prerequisite for MTH 504 Statistics, which serves as a required course for a range of bachelor’s degree programs.
Because of this, MTH 402 becomes a critical course for many students and if it has been several years since you’ve taken a math course, it can seem overwhelming. We’re here to help!
For admittance into MTH 402:
You need to meet one of the following:
- Acceptable scores on the Accuplacer placement test:
⋅ Arithmetic - 80 or better (Classic Test), 263 or better (Next Generation)
⋅ Algebra - 34 or better (Classic Test)
⋅ Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Stats - 237 or better (Next Generation) - Approved exemption based on previous high school transcripts taken within the last five years: a grade of C or better in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry (also referred to as Integrated Math 1, Math 2, and Math 3)
- SAT Math score of 500+ or ACT Math score of 18+ within five years of registration
- Successful completion of the ALEKS Program Math Tutorial as determined by our Math faculty
- Developmental math course with grade of B or better on transcript of regionally accredited college, within five years of registration.
- Acceptable scores on the math portion of the Praxis test taken within the last five years:
⋅ ParaPro Assessment - 450 or better
⋅ Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics - 150 or better
Accuplacer
What is the Accuplacer Assessment?
Accuplacer assessments provide you and the UNH College of Professional Studies with useful information about your academic skills in mathematics to ensure readiness for college-level math classes. Each assessment can be taken up to three times and includes two areas: (1) arithmetic and (2) quantitative reasoning, algebra, and statistics. The exam consists of 20 multiple choice questions for each test. Assessments are not timed, so you can work at your own pace.
The results of your assessments will be used by your Academic Advisor to help you determine your course selection. It is important that you do your best on these tests so that you will have an accurate measure of your academic skills.

Accuplacer testing is available during business hours and is virtually proctored. To request a testing appointment, please submit a request.
The College periodically holds ACCUPLACER Workshops to help you prepare for the assessment. View our calendar for upcoming dates.
In addition, there are many resources publicly available that include sample questions and test-taking strategies, which are available online.

This web-based system assesses your math knowledge and provides an online instructional program developed exclusively for you that allows you to work individually to strengthen your skills.

Tutorial: The ALEKS system does not use multiple-choice questions. All answers are complete mathematical expressions and constructions. The ALEKS Tutorial will teach you to use the simple tools needed for your course.
Initial Assessment: ALEKS uses artificial intelligence to determine precisely what each student knows, doesn’t know, and is most ready to learn. Your first task is the Initial Knowledge Check, a 25-30 question assessment. Once completed, the results are revealed in a multi-colored pie chart. Each slice of the pie chart corresponds to areas of topics in the course.
Meeting the pre-requisite: You must complete at least 245 topics out of 270, about 90% of the Pie, to meet the pre-requisite for MTH 402, Math for Our World.
